Course Description
6th Grade Math reinforces basic mathematical concepts and introduces skills that are essential for all students. Concepts, procedures, and vocabulary that students will need in order to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses are introduced and continually practiced. Students begin with a general review of the four basic operations. They are introduced to exponents, geometric formulas, algebraic concepts, ratios, percentages, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing signed numbers. 6th Grade Math students work extensively with fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and estimating. Problem solving strategies are also an integral part of the curriculum.

Each student will receive consumable math texts this year. Course 1 is divided into two volumes. Students will receive volume 1 during first semester, and volume 2 at the beginning of the 2nd semester. Although the textbooks will remain in the classroom, students will have access to the online text as well as receive the textbooks on CD.
ONLINE TEXTBOOK ACCESS:
Will be available this year, and codes are provided on Weebly via link. www.FHSAFreeman.weebly.com
Interactive Notebook (iBook)
The composition book will be used for the math interactive notebook. This is a personalized textbook created by the student to help keep notes organized. It is also a portfolio to showcase what a student has learned in math class. This must be brought to class every day.
Criteria for Credit
All assignments, quizzes, and tests must follow Criteria for Credit. Criteria for Credit includes
showing all work, using pencil, taking off any perforated edges, boxing the final answer, and having a proper heading in the upper right hand corner that includes: Name, class period, and date. Each assignment should be titled with provided information.
Assignment Policies
There will be at least two graded assignments per week. These grades could be: an iBook check, daily in-class assignment (any assignment given during the class period to be completed in class), Do Now, quiz, math wondering participation, group work, homework, or project grade. Homework will be assigned on a daily basis (see Flipped Classroom handout for specifics). ALL due dates are provided with assignments and should be written in student’s Agenda Book.
Late Work
Due to the nature of this course, quick feedback is imperative to avoid continued misconceptions. Late work is accepted up to 2 days late (with a point penalty of 10% per day), however, students who submit late work will not be able to receive quick feedback, which could affect current assignments.
Absent- Make up Policy
When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to ask for class work / tests
per district policy. The student must make up the work outside of the classroom within the specified time frame.
Classroom Expectations:
- Arrive to class on time and be seated by the time the bell rings
- Be prepared with all necessary materials: pencil and composition book
- Be responsible for your own learning: Give results, not excuses
- Be respectful of others’ right to a positive learning environment
- Express your opinions in the correct time, place and manner.
- Never give up on yourself and ask me for help!
Extra Help – Tutoring - Resources
The online book has tutorials which solve problems step by step, videos, and more. Student iBooks are a wonderful resource when working on homework. Students are provided my cell number as well. Students should use these resources throughout the year.
